Many people have trouble sleeping at night. Insomnia, sleep apnea, nightmares and sleep disturbances are the most common problems.
Sleep apnea is a condition that results from interruption of breathing during sleep.
It occurs due to lack of oxygen in the brain and body and has two types:
1. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA):
- Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs as a result of relaxation of the tissues and muscles in the throat and blocking the airway during sleep.
Central sleep apnea:
- Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain does not send correct signals to the muscles that control breathing. It is a rare condition.
Sleep apnea can be seen in people of all ages. The main reasons are obesity, genetics, reflux, excessive neck width, allergy, sinus problems or nasal congestion due to deviation. The incidence is higher in men and people over the age of 40.
